When we hear the term “intercessor” we usually think it means, “someone who prays a lot.” While that may be true, this only scratches the surface of what an intercessor does. To truly understand intercession, we can look to Jesus.
“Therefore He is also able to save forever those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”
— Hebrews 7:25
Jesus is our intercessor. Not only did Jesus defeat death so that we could have a relationship with God, He also continues to advocate for us on a daily basis. This is an important aspect of intercession, it’s daily. An intercessor’s prayer is tenacious and persistent. Anyone can intercede, but when someone has the gift of intercession, this constant posture of prayer comes naturally. To be an intercessor is to be called to pray for a very specific purpose. It’s not just about praying for the things pressing upon our own heart — it’s praying for the things on God’s heart. This makes intercessors a crucial part of God’s will being accomplished on earth.
Though the gift of intercession plays a vital role in the Kingdom of God, it is often easily unnoticed. In fact, it’s a gifting that works behind the scenes, drawing more attention from its absence. My own life is an example of this. I am the granddaughter of an intercessor and daughter of an intercessor. My husband is the grandson of an intercessor. Both of our lives have been greatly impacted by their prayers, probably in more ways than we even realize. Whenever I meet someone who has experienced blessing in their life, there is usually an intercessor somewhere in their family tree. I believe that this is one of God’s designs for this particular gift — He designed it to be generational!
During the month of October, we will be taking a closer look at the gift of intercession and how it relates to B.E.A.U.T.Y. (Being Earnestly and Ultimately Totally You)!
