Merry Christmas
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:14 (NIV)
It was the dead of night in the countryside outside of Bethlehem. Amidst the stillness of the night, a group of shepherds are gathered, watching their flock. It was their job to ensure the safety of the sheep throughout the night, and to be alert as well as aware of any dangers. Little did they know that this was no ordinary night. Suddenly a light burst through the darkness, the glory of the Lord radiated around them, and an angel appeared. The shepherds, who were already on guard, were terrified at this sight, but the angel said:
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:10–12)
At the sound of the words, a heavenly celebration broke forth! Multitudes of angels appeared all around them, unable to contain their excitement. The hosts of angels begin to sing: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”
For the month of December, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us consider this amazing encounter the shepherds had with the angels. Let us seek to understand what it means to experience God’s glory and how this can bring peace to our lives.
