Inspirations on “Gardening” (Part 1)

by Jody Senna

During the last few days of March, while the temperatures here in Virginia are still quite chilly and Jack Frost was painting his final sparkly scenes on my morning windows, I found myself blessed with mini-miracles. While nothing short of spectacular, these tiny marvels reminded me to never look down on the day of small beginnings and, at the same time, granted visions of a preferable future.

What jewels could offer such hope and comprise such wonder? Seedlings. Yes, those tiny slips of green poking their little shoots out of the dark soil and brightening my mornings as I watch each planted seed begin its journey.

That might sound silly if you’ve never had the privilege of planting a seed and watching it grow, but gardening and seeing God bring growth and life as I dig in the soil is one of my life’s great joys. I think I’ve always loved playing in the dirt - I was a mudpie queen even as a little girl, and as I grew, I began snipping slips off of my neighbor’s plants and replanting them to see if they’d grow. Watching seedlings, or transplanted slip , grow into thriving and beautiful plants is one of life’s pleasures that God and I enjoy together. He’s used gardens to teach us and draw us closer to Him since He created our beautiful earth - and He enjoys displaying His workmanship for us to enjoy along with Him.
